The forest heals us. Its biodiversity brings us health

Of the plant species present in the ecosystems of the Iberian Peninsula, 112 have therapeutic applications recognized by the European Medicines Agency (EMA). These uses—along with others such as aromatic, culinary, dye-related, recreational, and religious applications—have been part of our traditional culture for many years and are documented in numerous ethnobotanical studies (PARDO DE SANTAYANA et al., 2014–2018; GARNATJE et al., 2020). Knowing how to make use of these resources and how to add value to them remains an unresolved challenge. And understanding the contribution that their use makes to forest economics, rural development, and the conservation of natural areas and biodiversity is essential (PARDO DE SANTAYANA et al., 2015).
